I've had the D70 for close to 2 years now, and would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. No matter what you plan to use it for (though I've largely shot wildlife and landscapes with it) it's likely to be excellent. The metering is perfect, the five spot focusing and continuous focus are truly useful.
I've done macro work with it as well, and the results are above average. The Nikon Capture program sold with the camera does some magical stuff to pictures that haven't turned out quite as you wanted. Buy it.
