My memory fails me, as it often does, but the opening lines of "Love in the time of Cholera" by Marquez was among the best I have ever read.
Also (here we go with that dang memory thing again) perhaps, the opening lines of Three men in a boat where the protagonist is convinced that he has got all the diseases in the book. Venky
