Gotta love Orlowski...several interesting observations there.

Everyone I've spoken with who attended Web 2.0 this year said it was an almost frenetically buzzing conference that somehow made one simultaneously elated and uncomfortable (which I think Orlowski captures well in this piece).

I need to clarify on the quotation of my earlier comments, reprinted below...I'm not saying its a bad thing for O'Reilly or anyone to pursue money once in awhile, and I think O'Reilly folks in particular are refreshingly upfront about their motivations. If anything, I was acting as apologist to excuse them for their part in creating the Web 2.0 that I experienced last year.

I'm sure some good came out of all the buzz at Web 2.0 2005. The industry can't "recover" without some unbridled optimism and self- congratulation returning as well, and actually its that optimism that seems to convince those with ideas to take a risk and start a company, so its all part of the dance.

When I ask the O'Reilly folks about it they they make a "ka- CHING" noise that means they are really just in it for the money.
