I never skip these things - even though sometimes the inner cringe is strong, to be potentially viewed as impecunious. Or miserly. It’s an interesting people filter to have and I laugh at my predicament openly. Interestingly enough, most of my friends who make easily 10x more than I did ( I’m in a better position now, gratefully) wished they were doing what I did at The Huda Bar. And I am very, very grateful for the people, the experiences and opportunities THB offered me. It was a good foundation, even if I needed to take a pay cut for a whole decade. I recently had to let someone go and it was made deeply unpleasant by him assuming no responsibility for his shortcomings and openly disparaging my managerial style as fouling up the work culture and then refusing to show up for work the remaining days he had left. Upon asking further, it seems to be standard practice in the corporate world, which made me extraordinarily sad - that the rules encourage poor integrity. And I’m glad I had my previous experience with people that cushioned the blow of this - and somehow I’m grateful (there’s that word again) that I had that experience over money.
