Hi Dave That's really cool. You might want to have a look at some of the Arduino microcontroller stuff too - cheap, lightweight and open source. Projects like RepRap.org use them a fair bit for controlling stepper motors etc.
I'm just hacking around with one as we speak (been a long time thing I've been wanting to look into) - very cool. There's also a few other open source projects up on kickstarter - I recently saw some people looking for funding for an open source laser cutter (similar to RepRap).
