Não sou muito bom em programação mas vou tentar ajudar.
Pelo que entendi, você só quer testar se o serviço PROFTPD está no ar ou não
certo?
Bom, eu faria isto verificando se o arquivo de PID dele existe.
Ex:
PID_PROFTPD=/var/run/proftpd.pid
test -f $PID_PROFTPD
if [ `echo $?` -eq 0 ]; then
exit 1
else
/etc/init.d/proftpd start > /dev/null
fi
ou,
PID_PROFTPD=/var/run/proftpd.pid
if [ -f $PID_PROFTPD ]; then
exit 1
else
/etc/init.d/proftpd start > /dev/null
fi

Amigos,
preciso de um script para que ele verifique se o proftpd esta no ar
ou nao, se ele estiver o script sai
se nao ele inicia o serviço com o comando de start .
isso por que o start nao pode ser mais automatico quando o maquina e
inicializada. ( tudo isso por causa de um auditor )
