Hi,
Over the past few months, my Linux workstation has begun locking up
completely. I mean, 100% totally unresponsive, just frozen stiff. It
has thus far only occurred while I've been in X Windows, but I'm
always in X anyway.
I'm using Redhat 7.1 with kernel 2.4.2 on a 350 Mhz Intel Pentium II
with 256 MB of RAM. I have been running a version of Redhat on this
hardware since 1998 and have never had any sort of problem like this
up until a few months ago.
The obvious question is what has been changed recently. Well earlier
in the year I added a new hard drive and a CD-RW, but nothing else in
terms of hardware for over a year. In terms of software, I upgraded
the system to Redhat 7.1 last March, but nothing else other than a few
minor applications here and there.
When the system freezes the screen does not change; it doesn't become
garbled. No combination of keystrokes produces any noticable effect.
All hard disk activity ceases. I have observed this while I am
connected to my ISP and when I am not. On one occasion I waited
several minutes but nothing happened. Each time this happens, I have
to perform a hard reset.
One thing is for sure, I cannot reproduce this problem. It comes
without warning for no apparent reason.
I am not sure what else I can do to identify the problem -- maybe an
upgrade, maybe turning on some extra logging somewhere? Got any ideas?
