well, I think I'll close this issue...I haven't had a problem for 3 or 4 days now...so 
I hope that's the last I hear of it...
FYI, if you're interested:

I added:

192.168.1.1    defectiveMachineName
192.168.1.2    win2000MachineName

to both /etc/hosts on my redhat AND (on the advice of a buddy) to my 
\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on my win2000 machine...
