That might be a bug with the VTY library. I have never tested sakura with
vty.
Any non-default sakura settings?

I have the problem with unpleasantly highlighted unicode in different
terminal emulators (sakura, urxvt) and pango frontend.
What version of Yi are you using? 0.6.2.4
