I remember it wasn't so difficult to add the face browser, but it looked
terribly out of place when I tried to do so. That was with Breezy or
something however.

Well, yeah, that's the point. We need a face-browser enabled greeter screen
that doesn't look out of place. I've used some that are, and I always switch
back to the Xubuntu GDM theme cause it's 'in place'.
