To answer Grant's question. Yes, I had added the X ports but I've now turned
off the firewall just to be sure.

OK, I got xtrace to work ("$ x11trace -n -D 192.168.1.1:10.0" & have the
instrument connect to display 10.0) and it was more instructive...
