Hi, bhutex!
I'm the admin of GNU FreeFont.
You mentioned some problems with the Hindi/Devnagari range in FreeSans.
We try very hard to address any bugs promptly, but can only do so if they
are reported to us (in enough detail we can understand).
Please report problems on the FreeFont bugs page!

Hi,
What does this mean?
"Package fontspec Warning:

script 'Devanagari'
This warning occured on input line 7."
The document starts with
===
\documentclass[12pt]{book}

indi, it should be enough to have tables tagged for the Devanagari
script.
Cheers!

Hi Zdenek,
All the tests we were doing on the FreeSerif Devanagari were in the
stock Ubuntu distro version of Firefox.
No special settings were made.
Have you sorted this out?
I seem to remember some bugs having to do with web fonts... I would
have to dig through my notes.

FreeSerif's current Devanagari glyphs are based on the Velthuis TeX font.
Hi Neal,
If there are real problems, I would like to try to fix them.
Would you please send me, all files for a test using FreeSerif only,
with the command line you use to build it? (I tried xelatex on the
test.tex file and the header file you posted, but I had to make a lot

Are you using the current version of 20120503 or some older one? A

I'll work with you guys off-line on those.
Thanks for your support!

Hi Khaled,

I don't see anything like your output, either on the last official
release of GNU FreeFont (20120503), or its latest SVN, either with my

Hi Pander,
One question regarding Khaled's reply:
He said he got the font file from you, and sure the hinting issue was
due to the fontforge problem.
But the other warnings I do not think could have arisen in any recent
copy of FreeSerif -- however older versions might have had rather

Hi Alessandro,
Let me clarify a bit.
The current standards for text encoding, Unicode, does not distinguish
the Serbian Cyrillic glyphs -- they are regarded as a style. A
stylistic substitution of glyphs can be specified, as you pointed out,
by an OpenType font.
PDF typically contains glyphs ex
HI Julian,
I'm the maintainer of GNU FreeFont.
This is the first I've ever heard of such an issue,
and I have no idea what might cause it.
I just tried your example on my system with the most recent
development version of the font--the effect you describe doesn't
happen.

Hi Françoise,
I'm aware of some serious problems. The development builds of FreeFont
should resolve these.
If you would like, I can give you access to development builds;
we would be glad to hear your input.

Hi Guys,
I ran xelatex on your Tex file on my system, using a recent build of
GNU FreeSerif.
(I don't know if xetex is getting the font from the system
installation or from its own installation.)
As near as I can tell, the results are very good.
Did I miss something?

Hi Jonathan,
You may have a point, although I don't think it's the whole story.
(Most of what follows is font-techy. Upshot is: I did find suspicious
issues in FreeFont, and have now fixed them.)
The font feature in FreeSerif that positions generic marks like these is
mark ('generic marks above
that.
Thanks!

Hi, all,
I have reproduced François' effect with FreeSerif, as well as
Dominik's effect with Sanskrit 2003.
I started with stock Linux Mint 19.1.
Then I installled TeXLive 2018 from the PPA of jonathonf/texlive-2018.
In the results of running xelatex on the sample, I did not see any
peculiarities
he macron
replaced with a double vertical line.
I think we have multiple issues here. There may be font issues in the mix.
Cheers

A few related points.
First, the issue with Murty Sanskrit and the l with dot below and
macron is of course a font issue.
Simply: the font is missing the glyph at U+1E39, which is exactly
LATIN SMALL LETTER L WITH DOT BELOW AND MACRON
I'll try to give the developers of that font a heads-up

Cheers!

Dominic,
I already wrote to somebody listed at the tiro.com website.
Yes, please, you point out the issues to the Sanskrit2003 people.
