To me, not having Mac OS X 10.8, it looks as if the "small" font is a Small
Caps font. It can't have an Unicode encoding. To

To second Herb, Alan's test file typesets without error on
Mountain Lion with the release version of MacTeX-2012.
The second font isn't in Lion, but is in Mountain Lion.
