I think the point is to allow swapping mySQL engines. Not that we should
recommend it. ;-)

Right now you cannot unless you edit gluon.sql.py and replace InnoDB
with MyISAM. I am not sure about the implications. The new DAL will
make it easier for you to write an adapter.
