You can still use IP forwarding, LCP and other features with bridge-domain.
All you need is to create a loopback interface and assign it as
bridge-domain's BVI.
About reassembling packets between node A and B - I'm not 100% sure, but I
suppose that you can do that with enabling proxy arp
