VNC startup problems

I've been using VNC successfully (but intermittently) for a few months from Windows 2000 clients to a Linux server on my home office LAN. Now I'm trying to to extend beyond the LAN and having some difficulty. It's hard to figure out what is happening because I can't simply look at both monitors.
