I also tried that, but the client is starting it
at 8 bit even if I use the vncviewer -depth 1

I am using the Redhat 7.2 RPM package.
First I modified the vncserver wrapper so that it
let's me use a depth smaller than 8.
I then went to the server and issued:
[alonsoa@fs01 alonsoa]$ ./vncserver-wrapper -depth 1 -geometry 640x480
New 'X'
