Dont type startx... edit the file ~/.vnc/.xstartup and write:
#!/bin/bash
gnome-session
Then restart VNC.

One further note on my crashing problem. I just noticed that it's not the
individual programs crashing. It's something called The KDE Splash Screen.
Anybody know what that is?

I haven't used KDE in a while, but as I recall it uses simpler graphics.
That's probably why it's faster -- areas of flat color will encode smaller
than GNOME's gradients and shading do.
