Hi
Ive only just started using vnc and have the server running on both WNT and
Solaris.
When running the Xvnc server on Solaris is there anyway a pc client can
display the Solaris Common Desktop Environment?
I currently get a single xterm and what looks like the Openwindows
interface.

I assume you are trying to get the viewer to request this every time. What
I've done is created a short cut to the viewer which passes the -8bit and

to do this (using the -listen argument), look at the "Launch viewer in
I am running a Win2000 PC connecting to a Win2000 server. I have a
Checkpoint firewall with ports 5800 and 5900 open. I connect successfully,
the screen gets painted, then within 5-10 seconds, the session completely
disappears. I did not find anything about this in the FAQs. Any thoughts?
I haven't tried this way of distribution myself, but I think the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default with key Password set to a
nice password should work.

Assuming you are using Windows, no, I don't believe so.
In the future, it would help if you told us which platform (Windows 9x,
NT, Mac, Linux, etc.) and VNC version you are using.

Another problem that I see quite frequently is when the VNC Server has both
a Default Password and User-Level password defined. For some reason that I
have still not been able to figure out, VNC Server allows this. When the
machine is logged off, you need the Default Password to access the session

to execute it.

Make sure /usr/local/bin/vncserver is executable. Also,
make sure /tmp is readable and writeable by everyone.
Finally, please post the exact output of "vncserver :"
(eg "vncserver :1") so we can see what's really happening.

It may not help for NT 4.0 but if you are using W2K, you can create a .msi
file, share that out with it's support files and then point a login script
to the .msi file. An user with administrative rights does have to login to
the machine once to get the service to install correctly.

Your biggest problem will be, that the installation needs administrative
rights on the machine. Still couldn't manage that with a login script...

Has anyone created an NT logon script to automatically install VNC to a
users PC if it hasn't already been installed. The login script might search
for a particular file on user's machine and if it's not found launch VNC

No. Both clients are running at 1280x1024, server at 800x600. I've got
the clients running the session on window and not fullscreen though?
(question mark for 'does that make any difference?')

It's not currently in the works, but may be added in future. Remind me in

it would be nice if there was a VNC URL so that a web page

Java is by no means universally enabled in browsers, and
many of us prefer to use the native client. At any reate
the http URL for the java client solves a diferent problem:
how to get a client started. The proposed vnc: url addresses

I have read the FAQ's about setting up VNC to run through a firewall, but
was left a bit confused. Can anyone help?
My Win2k PC sits behind a firewall. The VNC server is outside the firewall.
Exactly what ports do I need to open up on my firewall so that I can connect
to the outside VNC server?
I see your point! Its actually 5803 if they haven't changed that yet. On
the version I have, the web server listens on its own port. You would use
http://vnc.serv.er:5803 to connect to display 3(port5903)

I believe that Bob wanted it to open VNCViewer, not Java viewer.
