I've just had to the email about upgrading due to:
12 May 2006 The following versions released today have important security
patches...
What exactly is the security patch patching and should we be worried? We use
VNC internally and it's not currently drilled through the firewall.
Thanks, Rob.

Can this be done with the normal viewer or would the attacker have to use a
special program?
Thanks, Rob.

And F8 followed by D selects that menu option which is actually fewer
keystrokes than CTRL-ALT-DELETE :-)

Only thing similar we've encountered is sometimes double-click to open
things doesn't seem to work or at least, very unreliably as if the clicks
are getting lost.

Am I right in saying that the original poster is wanting to use VNC from
somewhere else to "see" the terminal server sessions of the users who are
connected from the dumb terminals?
If this is the case, then I think you're right in saying it won't work. VNC
can be used on TS but only to allow you
Is the 64 bit Enterprise version available yet? It was mentioned as being in

Over the years, I've used a whole variety of remote control systems all of
which, at their core, do the same thing. They make what's drawn on one
screen (or buffer) appear at the other end of the wire and send
keyboard/mouse events back the other way.
We're very impressed with VNC mainly because i

We've rolled out VNC to our servers and workstations, all configured to lock
the console when the VNC session is closed. Works fine on the Windows 2000
servers and PCs but not on the NT 4 servers. They don't lock.
Is this a know problem or a configuration issue?
Thanks, Rob.

I can only speak about Metaframe 1.8 installed on Terminal Server but this
works a treat. We have VNC viewer installed as a published application. Run
the published VNC application across the Internet and then connect to any
internal PC as normal.
Cheers, Rob.

Yes you can a) add AllowProperties DWORD in registry to prevent editing and
b) change the default password key. The password is encrypted but I assume
you can enter the password you want on a PC and then copy it across.
This can all be done usually with REGEDT32 connecting to the remote
computer.
>1 - Have a password for connecting to the desktops.
It has a password.

Don't think it does this but what we usually do is call them and say "we're
about to take over your PC for a few mins" :-
Is there a document somewhere describing the new features/changes in the
next major version?
Thanks, Rob.

>So, there you go. Job done. TS and VNC complement each other perfectly.
Yes they do - we use both. Terminal Server & Citrix has two primary
advantages:
o Reduce TCO by using server based centralised computing
o Publish legacy Windows applications on the web
This isn't really what VNC is about
>No it's not.
Is RDP far more tightly tied into the back end rendering system in Windows
TS or is it just a protocol for transferring bitmaps etc. down low-bandwidth
lines?
It used to be that Citrix ICA protocol knocked the spots off RDP but RDP has
now caught up in terms of efficiency.
RDP/ICA
How is the W2K server PC exposed to the outside world? Via a firewall with

I had something similar to this in the following scenario:
1. Uninstalled VNC 3.3.7 on NT 4 TS system
2. Installed VNC 4.0 and imported legacy settings
3. Checked service was running
4. Tried to connect with VNC 4.0 viewer
Something flashes on screen but it wouldn't connect. Rebooted the host and
Yes, GotoMyPC is a doddle to set-up and gets around most firewalls without
