There are three ways to stop the VNC service (or any Windows service for
that matter) from starting on boot-up. In decreasing order of
Yes, it should work from remote. However, you need to know what your
external IP address is and also forward port 5900. You really should tunnel
your VNC connection somehow, as free VNC does not encrypt the session and
anything you do (including passwords) can be sniffed.
Also, did you register VN
Yep. Windows firewall can be kinda tricky as you don't have to turn it on...
it's automatically enabled in Windows XP SP2, which is a good thing. :-)

I'm CC-ing the list and removing the first two octets of your external IP
for your security. :-) The list should get a copy of this so that if someone
else has the same questions in the future, maybe they'll find the answers in
the archives. :-)

One other thing... it looks like the how-to for installing SSH in Windows is
a bit outdated. There's a pretty good "all-in-one" installer that installs
everything you need here: http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/

If only Latin-1 text is supported, how we could use it for others, like
Chinese?
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm using the personal edition of the vnc and I'm interested to buy the new
Nokia N80.
I would like to know if you think that I'll be able to use it on the nokia N80
(symbian) and so access my computer from my nokia.
Thanks!

Right, but due to his question i figured he was not as techincal so i was
thinking more of the 'canned' encryption options that are available.

1) Is there any way to "detect" a Xvnc connection instance so that the
xsession or xinitrc script only launches
vncconfig for a Xvnc connection ???
2) Does each Xvnc instance need its own copy of vncconfig or can
vncconfig support multiple Xvnc
3) How does vncconfig know which Xvnc display

I installed realvnc vnc-4.1.1 on several windows 95 machines, after
first installing winsock2 and restarting w95. All looked OK, but nmap

One more question:
What happens when multiple copies of vncconfig are launched
either thru vncserver xstartup
of via xmd start-up ???

Thanks for responding
I am using redhat 6.2 (yes I know it is old) (:
IN this case I think the default is gdm
But XDMCP is enabled and working
I am using win32 xdeep32.exe x-win manager to connect to xdmcp desk
top no problem
And if you re-read my email
inetd with port (5900) works perfe
It sounds as if your xinit isn't getting called for some reason, so you're
not getting the window manager of choice. Don't know if that'll help you
any. I know that when I ssh in and manually start VNC on my Fedora Core 3
system (and it was the same in RedHat 9) the VNC startup script called

Hi John,
thanks
If I launch without inetd as follows:
vncserver -query xxx -once
It works great...
If I use inetd with port ( 5900 ) it works great
If I use inetd with "nowait" and port ( 59xx ) it gets buggy first
connection bank screen, 2-n connections work great
If I use inetd w
I guess the new free version of RealVNC 4.1.2 fixes the security problem
that mentioned earlier on this list (and slashdot).
Get it quick if you are exposing VNC server to the internet without or
any other vpn software.

yup I figured that out and tried it .. that works
But
I also discovered that you can use the following
vncserver -query -once
With the above you do not need to add "/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc" to the
start up script,
in fact with the above you should comment everything out of the star
Thanks Jeff,
Yup, basically been there done almost all of that stuf
I was running as root that did not help
Yes I know XDMCP is working I connect in using several different x-win
managers such as cygwin x-win
yes I have the font server up and running
xdeep32 is another free x-win mana
woops
I meant I was trying (wait) to get a persistent session
(nowait) works great with port ( 5900 )
(nowait) hickups with port ( 59xx) first connect gets greys screen,
second-xx connection, works great.
Ok I also tried adding -fp unix/:7100 (it did not make any
difference)

;-)
I don't recall right off what the "unix" means in the font path, but is
the URI format required to connect to a broadcasting font server. I'll
look for the info later.
As far as /etc/services, I thought that /etc/services was mandatory for
using Xvnc in inetd mode because they work together
Kudos for the quick fix! A lot of us are not going to be able to
install it without the source though. When will it be released? I
recommend everyone running VNC behind SSH if possible to mitigate
these attacks.
