Can I suggest (to the RealVNC people) that a little note be added to
http://www.realvnc.com/v4/x0.html saying that you *must* specify the
location of the passwd file in the Option section?

You could probably switch off monitor physically or by software like
screen-saver but beware that there're some incidents telling that VNC is not able to
wake up monitor in sleep mode, though nobody knows why.
As to hibernate, I think you'd better try it yourself than asking here
Things can't just stop working suddenly. If you're sure you haven't installed

Hey,
I have read everyone's answers and I understand the router/firewall/VNC
settings and my need for port forwarding, but I still do not understand what
to actually do to workaround this problem.
I am on a LAN and my IP address is w.x.y.z and I used to directly connect my
computer to the ethernet
What do you mean by "logged off from the network"? It's network adapter's
parameters like IP addresses and network masks were erased (which isn't a "logout" per
se but)? Or you just simply meant the session is logged off (which has nothing to do
with network)?

I've ignored this conversation up to this point, so excuse me if this
information repeats.

I am running RedHat Enterprise Linux WS 3 on dual Xeon machine. I have

similar experience or suggestions as to how I can solve this problem.

Have you tried the VNC4 version that comes with RHEL?

Hey Everybody,
I just wanted to write to thank everyone for their help in fixing my VNC
problems. I couldn't figure out why my port forwarding wasn't working and
why I didn't have access to VNC, and that's why I started with square one
with the networking questions. It turns out that my Netgear

I am new to VNC software. I just installed X86

My work PC is on LAN and the IP address is not

both, but I got message: 'Failed to connect to

You should not have an issue with Netgear Remote Management and VNC
clashing.
The Netgear Remote Management facility is smart enough to allow to Remote
Management to be set to use any port (use the Port Number field on the
Remote Management page of the the Netgear GUI). I set mine to a nice obscure
I have been using VNC for many years now... I must say, it has been the
greatest life saver... I would like to push it to the next level in our
organization if possible.
In particular, I would like to have our sale staff start to use it for sales
purposes.I will use a cheesey example below...

Assuming you are referring to a *nix OS, you can edit vncserver (it is a
perl script) and change the default.

Hi.
I'm seeing the following problems with multiple platforms running vnc 4.0b4
with Solaris 8/9 operating environments:
- vncserver dying
- vncviewer exiting
- vncviewer hanging the system for a few minutes when it cannot get a
connection
Are folks aware of these issues?

I've written an entirely custom vncserver script that we use
internally. One of the customizations we have allows for "global"
settings for things like the geometry and color depth and those settings
can be overridden by user customizations by looking at parameters inside
a ~/.vnc/Xvnc.rc file.
Is there a way to monitor my host that will display how many and which clients
are attached to the server?
Thank you,
Best Wishes,

All:
I hate to raise an issue that has probably been brought up and answered,
but I was unable to find a solution to this problem posted. Hopefully
someone out there can tell me the solution to this; or provide
information on any workarounds to this problem.

Fastpush (http://www.darkage.co.uk/downloads/index.htm) supports the VNC
