you don't need apache; the only thing to do is to forwar the port 5900 and
5800 in your router/modem to see your vnc server from the WAN side.

the windows computers are through my linux computer.

You don't need to disable the firewall, only you need is to tell what port
number you want to listen, so when it detect an incoming call for your vnc
server this firewall let free to contact the vnc server.
