Keep in mind I was able to connect before. So, then I turned off the

Thanks for pointing out that the Unix Enterprise Editions (Solaris, Linux

Another option would be to use a service such as Glance (www.glance.net)
which behaves exactly as you describe. Trouble is, it costs $49.95 per
month. But, on the plus side, it is absolutely trivial to setup and get
going, and it doesn't matter if anyone is behind a strict firewall. So,

it sounds like your problem is that you are behind a firewall (either
personal or router based) which is blocking the connection coming into you
from the internet.
You will need to 'forward' port 5900 to your local ip address. This is
normally handled in the router software.

Heya. So what does the UI of EchoVNC report when you install
it alongside your RealVNC Server? It will try to detect your VNC server
listening on the loopback interface (127.0.0.1). If it can detect a
VNC server, you should be able to make VNC connections with it.

Whereas straight RDP requires the "supported" PC to have port 3389 open,
the Remote Assistance only requires outbound access to 3389 from both

Hi,
I am having what looks like an X authentication error.
When I run a program from my desktop, telling it to run in :1, where my
vncserver is running, I get error messages. I can see the vnc server
with a vncviewer. The vnccconfig and xterms are running, and the usual
grey background is there.

If both computers are XP, and you would like your parents to request
your help, then I would recommend using the built-in Remote Assistance
feature of XP. Your parents would simply email you a request, and you
will be able to immediately take control of the desktop.

Scott,
Fundamentally, no - Administrators are similar in capabilities to the root
user on UNIX platfirms, and cannot therefore be prevented from manipulating
the machine in any way they wish.
There are some registry-only settings that can be used to grey out the

Can you check what version your VNC server is logging in the relevant log

Are you having problems with VNC Viewer for Java?
