Just a bit of a nudge - I thought I'd try this again with a newer kernel and
VDR (2.6.17 in Ubuntu edgy and VDR 1.4.4) in case something small and subtle
had been fixed.

- VDR machine is a Via EN 1500. This machine has a 1.5 GHz processor
and 512 Mb ram. In it is a FF technotrend card. This machien has no
harddisk and boots over the network from:
- Server: Dell With dual core processor, and SATA disks.

What command line are you starting vdr with?
try adding '-l 3' to the command line
There should be some messages in /var/log/messages, and also in the shell
screen where VDR was started.
I'd recommend building from sources and setting the recordings directory in
Make.config

pointing at Astra so far (using softdevice for decoding):
