are you using openldap 2.1 ?
the vpopmail schema is not compatible with higher version (the
vpopmail schema is not state of the art)

I am working with Courier IMAP v. 3.0.7 + qmail + vpopmail 5.2 and 5.4
under Solaris 80, Vpopmail use LDAP as authentication method. They
worked fine for years.

Slapd isn't going to get anything if vpopmail doesn't see it as a valid
domain.

I found the problem with slapd. I recompiled slapd with my
OpenLdap version in solaris. It works nicely now.
