Have you looked in the logs to see if it gives a reason why the authentication failed? eg if you compiled vpopmail with --enable-logging=p, then you could try looking in your syslog files (commonly /var/log/maillog) for more info and/or if you compiled vpopmail with the --enable-mysql-logging opt
