Yep, what you did is the right thing.
The problem is, how can a configure script automatically figure
out what libraries to use? It's not an easy problem to solve.
The simplist way is to do exactly what you did.

I dont think you can do this
I do remember seeing a patch somewhere that allows it (maybe it was on
qmail.org?), but I think there are some pretty strong

Using qmail? No. Maybe some day there'll be a patch that can be used
for a limited number of scenarios like this, but AFAIK there's none
yet.
