My apologies. I dropped the ball on this one. I've just re-read the

importantly it seems you have no default host ?

To be clear, the temporary fix worked for the customer in question, and that's
awesome. By "still biting us," I meant we have several hundred others, some of
which may be impacted for a while after when we shift loads, so the problem
messes with fault tolerance and maintenance.
