"jakarta-tomcat"? If not your script needs to be edited to reflect the
new directory structure -
CATALINA_HOME=/usr/local/apache-tomcat-5.5.12
DAEMON_HOME=/usr/local/apache-tomcat-5.5.12/bin

You could send your tomcat init script, it would give me
more info about what could be wrong.
It looks like something is missing on the classpath.
One thing you could try. Don't copy jsvc and
use it directly from where it was build.

It's in $CATALINA_HOME/bin/jsvc-src.tar.gz you need to
unpack it and compile it yourself.
