It is possible to do this in a number of ways
- Container Managed Realm:

- But does not support ldaps:// . ldap via SSL
- if you want SSL with ldap, use mozilla-java-ldap-sdk: here are good

It's quite possible via Apache...
If it is not possible via Tomcat than this would be one of those reasons
to use Apache as a web server.
