Thanks for so many useful inputs. i totally agree with the following and had
tried to get root user's environments by added
. /etc/profile
. /root/.bash_profile
in
/etc/init.d/tomcat
(we do not want to change /sbin/service)
but it did not work

i have a very weird problem with starting tomcat and would be most grateful if
any one can give me some clue.
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 8)
java: jdk1.6.0_14
tomcat:apache-tomcat-6.0.20
if i try to start tomcat using
service tomcat start
it hang
