The problem will be fixed in the next release: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PDFBOX-6027 until then, use the workaround mentioned in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PDFBOX-4817 I'm still interested what happened on your side, i.e. if you had Apache Xalan in your class path, or
