If snapshot is not possible, the only scenario which could be recommended
is
inconsistent backup of Container's filesystem (tar on /vz/root/)

If I had this scenario, and REALLY could not make a vzdump --suspend
(this only produces few seconds of pause), then my idea can be to create
a synchronized mirror container and use it as backup. The mirror
container can also be "backuped".
