I have been using OpenOffice, and especially Writer, on three Macs over the
past five years. No problems, excellent convenience. I am 77 years of age.

So simple, I am sure, but . . . . How does one change the default save format
in Writer from .odt?

Rob,
I appreciate your thorough answers, from which I often learn much. But on this
one, I use OO 4.0.0, and there is no "Options" choice under "Tools." Can you
tell me, please, where I might find it? Thanks.

Shari,
I am not exactly a klutz, but I am far from "highly proficient," and I have
been using OO comfortably with no problems on both Snow Leopard and Lion Macs.
I do not have Mavericks. Anyway, I highly recommend both Mac and OO for
ordinary people use.

For what it's worth, I find that Open Office will not open such files, but
Libre Office will. The file must then be saved with a new suffix and can be
opened by Open Office.
Hope this helps.

In my experience, OOW will not open WP documents, but Libre Office, also freely
