You shouldn't have to sign up for anything to download OpenOffice and install
it.

If your old hard disk is undamaged, you can still recover your data.
It is enough to connect it to any compatible computer with the 'slave'
setting and copy the data to a removable flash drive. These are also other
recovery methods, but I don't know what equipment you have.
