Rory is usually right about things like this, but there’s one trick you might
try. Find that ODT file in Windows Explorer (or the Finder if on a Mac). Change
the file extension from .odt to .zip, and unzip the file. Open the one named
“content”. It will have all the text in it, but none

If you are able to open an existing template while already having an
opened Calc file, please tell me how. I don't mean using File | Recent
Documents.
I am not able to open the quick access launcher/dashboard, or whatever
it's called, if I already have a Calc file opened.

There is only a 32 bit version of AOO available for Windows. It will run
on either a 32 bit or 64 bit Windows OS. If you are using 64 bit Windows
OS you need a 32 bit Java for some AOO functions.
