For passwords, I suggest 2 methods.
1. Write down all passwords and lock in a safe physical box.
2. Do not write down your password in any place. Use only one or very few
passwords for all accounts.
If your work is very valuable, you need an expensive lock, software or
physical.

My answer (too late to help you much, but...) is to avoid passwords like the
plague unless you have untrustworthy users on your computer (or for Internet
links, etc). You've learned why, the hard way.
