I'm using OO on a Windows 8.1 so I can right click on the file in
Documents, choose "Send to" and then "desktop as icon". Works for me.
Just about any file can be put on the desktop in the same way. Then
click on the icon and the file opens. If you use a Mac it might be
different.

I am a new user of Open Office.
To open an Excel spreadsheet I first open “OpenOffice, then choose
“Spreadsheet” then select the file.
Is there a way that I can place a shortcut icon on the desktop which will open
a specific sheet without opening OpenOffice first?
Thanks,
John H
Yes. The file will load just fine--UNLESS you try to Insert-->From file... If
you do that, the inserted file overwrites the one you loaded originally. So I
have to open each Excel file and save it as an .ott. Then I can copy/paste
between them normally.

OK - I am only playing with 4.1.0 right now so I might give it go. See how the
weekend goes. Thanks.

Thanks to those who replied.
To Martin, I have written much software over the years that was indeed

told me this so it must be true.
Anyway, as I mentioned in the previous email -

Have you tried just loading an MS file directly?
