A quick message just to confirm that this problem
really had nothing to do with OpenMPI.
It was caused by an incorrect wrapper script for gcc.

I have been testing with an old pathcc-1.2 and pathcc-2.2.1 (which uses
gcc-3.3.1) on Opteron systems without errors.
