- updatedness.
- application you are trying with
- if run a terminal with tail -f /var/log/messages,

every now and then audio works-
but usually not.
tests on outputs ( pulseaudio, jack audio, esound
& my card specific entry ) typically yield no
sound, and often produce the 'output not funcioning'
pop-up.
removing pulseaudio has not produced
