It is still called pavucontrol in F14.
I've been having problems sorting out my sound as well recently. Seems
PA is getting confused as to whether I want my sound coming
I also have sound problems on a studio 1750.
I'm running KDE and most of the time have no sound after logging in.
But what seems to always work is:
killall pulseaudio
After that sound works fine!

Sound should be automatic but it is possible
