I use mate without compiz. Marco is the default WM, so when I boot into mate, I
just remove all of the compiz-related files.

Install gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons.
Run gnome-tweaks to enable this extension for your account.
I personally don't use this extension, so I can't say how good this will
work.
