Well, after trashing many CDs I discovered that, if I use dao mode
(either with wodim from the command line or with k3b) I can burn
readable CDs by using the Asus drive. I looks like there are no hopes
for the Plextor burner...

I tried again by creating an ISO image and burning it from the command
line by using wodim: same results, the CD results to be unreadable.
Dmesg reports the following error when inserting the burned media in the
drive:
sr 6:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostb
