Can we all assume that you've booted into the previous kernel and confirmed that it continues to function correctly? Yes, that's correct. Installed Xfce and the mouse/close problem ceases to exist. Xfce is quite nice, easy to get used to, easy to use. Seems it's definitely a Gnome 3 bug. than

I would suggest you actually try another desktop (KDE or XFCE) to confirm that it does actually affect all desktops not just gnome. As suggested by others, please look in your xorg and the messages logs. Also you may want to check your batteries in your mouse. gene Mouse batteries are new.

Thanks but the mouse is not functional when this happens. problem with the gnome3 desktop is the lack of easily findable shortcuts and hot keys. I cannot find a hot key to bring up a terminal so cannot try ps aux and kill the app that way. The only option is to switch to another login, I've tried
