y to ditch gnome, ditch kde, ditch plasma, or whatever
just to get a system that will stably stay up for more than a
week or so. Before this happened I could run for a year or more
with no problem.

One of the nice things about UNIX is the clean and minimal ethic that it
was born with. I think that we need to work to keep it as simple as
possible - especially in the core system. Otherwise it becomes nearly
impossible to learn and less maintainable over time.

red-herring.
I'm downloading an F18 live image to try a rescue on the boot
setup. An f17 image was unable to cope with the GPT conversion.
After saying that it identified and mounted the old root
partition (but "may have had some problems"), the mount po
ystem to do a boot
sector repair. Should I try with an F18 bootable flash drive?
Under the F17 debug prompt /dev/sda2 (boot) and /dev/sda4 (root)
both give clean fsck checks.
I appreciate any suggestions.

net.
The nrm approach also diverts lots of support requests from the
department backup guru, and lets most users fix their own problems
wi
-UX since about 1987, and on linux since 1997.
I'd consider it pretty solid at this point.
