incorrect colour
profile with the new printer. Neither takes any notice of the settings
for gamma etc in the HP manager (though they do affect the results when
printing directly)
I'd be very grateful for any advice - I'm tearing my hair out now!

Fedora 15 seems not to install yum-updatesd but it doesn't sound to be
worth putting it in anyway.

Personally, I prefer to do a clean install, since it gets rid of
accumulated clutter. That assumes you have a convenient way of backing
up your /home directory.
