Just checked on a RHEL 4 AS, and it detected my gdbm installation, and
"magically", used it to compile Apache 1.3.37.
I would sugest you to remove your "hand-made" gdbm installation, and
install the default RedHat packages (try the following command: "yum
install gdbm gdbm-d
