on Linux 2.6.10 (running on a Xen virtual server). Currently I'm facing an
odd problem where long POST-requests end up creating a "400 Bad request"

Seg faults can be caused by an inconsistent compilation: eg, if you re-compiled
apache but kept the old php module. Try recompiling both together (as you would
for a new install).
PS - I assume a unix/linux server (although you don't say...)
