Right... so busybox ifconfig doesn't speak enough IPv6,

Since you seem to have IPv6 module loaded, and IPv6 addresses in your
ifconfig output, but your ifconfig won't add it.
If your 'ifconfig' from busybox? Maybe it is too limited to do the work.
You mention WRT, which is why I suspect ifconfig is really at fault.
But, your ifconfig line seems wrong

I have a configured a bridge and a tap interface on the host system. The tap
interface is bridged with eth1 of the UML.
